They edited the proverb

“Jack of all trades, master of none.”

You’ve heard it as a warning your whole life. Every time your ambition sprawled in more than one direction, someone reached for that sentence like a leash.

Here’s what they didn’t tell you: that’s half a sentence.

The full line reads: “A jack of all trades is a master of none, though oftentimes better than a master of one.” The second half — the part carrying the actual meaning — was cut. And the fragment left behind became a tool, used to shame range-thinkers into compliance with a system that was never designed to accommodate them.

That omission didn’t happen by accident. Range is harder to manage. Harder to underpay. Harder to fit inside an org chart. So they edited the proverb and called it wisdom.

I refused the edit. I am a compliance professional, a media founder, a music creator, a cultural architect, and a keynote speaker — not sequentially, simultaneously. Not as a distraction from a real career, but as the full expression of one. The world calls that

confusing. I call it complete.

And here’s what the lane-pickers miss: the lanes compound. TIME AFRICA’s editorial architecture is tighter because I know how compliance frameworks are built. The risk thinking I bring to partnerships comes from years of third-party risk management. The compliance instinct made me a sharper founder; the founder instinct made me a more creative operator. No single lane produced that. The intersection did.

Now look at the double standard. Amazon, Meta, Apple operate across industries, product lines, revenue streams — and the word for that is diversified. Portfolio. Ecosystem. A human being does the same thing and the word is scattered. Same behavior. Different body. Different label. Different pay grade.

The “You Are Not One Thing” philosophy isn’t a rejection of focus. Focus means knowing why each lane connects to the others — a through-line that gives your range direction. It doesn’t mean performing one identity until the others atrophy.

Your range is not your weakness. It is your competitive moat. The person who understands compliance and culture and content doesn’t just fill a role. They create categories that didn’t previously exist.

This week: write down your lanes, then write the sentence that connects them. That’s your moat. That’s your brand.
